The Rhythm Remains

On 1 July, Hiphophuis, House of Knowledge, Kunstinstituut Melly and Operator come together to mark Keti Koti with an afternoon of food, music and community.

As we commemorate the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the former Dutch Antilles, we invite our communities to gather, reflect, connect and celebrate. Together, we create space for remembrance and joy, honouring the resilience, creativity and cultural traditions that continue to shape us today.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors are welcome to share a Heri Heri meal as part of KIP Republic’s Free Heri Heri For All initiative, while DJs Mo Wright and Watra Zola provide the soundtrack for the day. Moving through sounds from across the African diaspora, their selections celebrate the rhythms, stories and musical traditions that have travelled across generations, oceans and borders.

Come share a meal, stay for a drink, meet old and new friends, dance, reflect and celebrate with us.
Because while histories may be interrupted, displaced or forgotten, the rhythm remains.

Keti Koti betekent “de ketenen zijn verbroken.” Op 1 juli 1863 werd de slavernij in Suriname en de Nederlandse Antillen officieel afgeschaft, maar de doorwerking van dat verleden is tot op de dag van vandaag voelbaar. In onze gemeenschappen, in onze cultuur, in onze straten. Keti Koti is het moment om dat te herdenken, te erkennen en ook te vieren, de veerkracht, de creativiteit, de joy die nooit weggeweest is.

Hip-hop is zelf een product van die veerkracht. Ontstaan in zwarte gemeenschappen als antwoord op onderdrukking en verwaarlozing, groeide het uit tot een van de krachtigste culturele bewegingen ter wereld. Keti Koti en hip-hop delen dezelfde bodem: verzet, gemeenschap en de weigering om onzichtbaar te zijn.

Op zaterdag 27 juni brengt Hiphophuis een eigen programma als partner van het Keti Koti-programma van Theater Rotterdam. Van lezing tot documentaire tot community market en aan het eind een brassband die je meeneemt naar de Block Party.

Hoe wordt een straatfeest met DJ’s en grote boxen een politieke plek? Theatermaker en schrijver Maarten van Hinte duikt in de geschiedenis van de block party, hoe deze feesten ontstonden, wat ze betekenden en waarom ze er nog steeds toe doen. Binnen zwarte gemeenschappen waren block parties altijd meer dan entertainment. Het waren plekken van black joy en verzet, middenin de strijd voor gelijkwaardigheid. Na de lezing beleven we dat samen.

Documentairescreening & Q&A: Tra Fasi

Tra Fasi is het regiedebuut van Charity Charly, een portret van en eerbetoon aan Surinaams icoon-in-wording Shavero Ferrier. Opgegroeid in een omgeving vol stigma’s rond punk en rockmuziek, bouwde hij van nul een community op en creëerde uiteindelijk de alternatieve scene die hij zelf altijd had gemist. Aangedreven door het geluid van (voormalige) bands als Mutha Flac, Luguber en De Rotte Appels spat expressie en bevrijding van het scherm. Punkers tot de dood! Na de screening is er een Q&A.

Community Market en Expo

De hele middag vind je bij Hiphophuis een community market en expo, georganiseerd door Glemiël Polak. Jonge kunstenaars tonen en verkopen hun werk, en de opbrengst gaat naar de bouw van een skatepark in Suriname. Kom langs, kijk rond en steun iets dat telt.

This year, Hiphophuis continues to platform new talent rising from the ground up. Museumnacht010 becomes a night dedicated to the journey from raw beginnings to powerful expressions of art, dance, and music.

From late-night practices to shared studios. From first sketches to performances. From individual voices to collective movements. Hip-hop has always grown from the ground up: through connection, through community, through doing the work. During Museumnacht010, Hiphophuis becomes a living space where visitors can see that process up close: how art, dance, and music take shape when people create together.

Highlights Of The Night

Hybrid X Exhibition Launch:

Luciano Hiwat presents his Hybrid X platform, including the concept videos and original music he has developed over the past year. As part of his development trajectory, supported by Hiphophuis, he worked alongside eight emerging makers to build their craft. Through dedication, discipline, and their own lived stories, they have sharpened and deepened their practice.

During this launch, they share not only the final outcome, but also the process: the first ideas, the experiments, the growth, and the decisions behind the work. In line with From the Ground Up, the focus here is on foundation: how work is built from the floor, from community, and from the necessity to create your own platform.

Silent Disco with Two Channels:

Two channels. Two collectives. Two distinct sounds. Each with its own signature, yet connected through shared culture. Rooted in different backgrounds, both collectives build their own energy while remaining part of the same foundation. From the Ground Up takes shape here as diversity within a shared base, staying true to your roots while opening space for new directions.

Exhibition Battles w/ Live Music:

Where movement meets live sound. Crews and collectives exchange energy with live musicians, creating a direct dialogue through performance. Presented in collaboration with our in-house family: House of Knowledge and IBE. Here, performance is created in the moment: from the floor, through interaction, and through collective energy. From the Ground Up means building in real time, carried by the cypher, the community, and trust in each other’s craft.

Kinderdag is een jaarlijks kinderfestival dat in 2019 werd opgericht door OSCAM als een creatief en inclusief alternatief voor traditionele vieringen. Het is een dag waarop ieder kind zich gezien, gevierd en vrij mag voelen om volledig zichzelf te zijn. Want voor veel kinderen is representatie allesbehalve vanzelfsprekend. Ervaringen met racisme, discriminatie of simpelweg het gebrek aan herkenning in hun omgeving kunnen hun identiteitsvorming beïnvloeden. Kinderdag wil dat doorbreken.

Kunst en creativiteit geven jonge mensen de ruimte om hun verhaal te vertellen, hun plek op te eisen en trots te zijn op wie ze zijn. Wat begon als een samenwerking tussen OSCAM en Omroep Zwart is uitgegroeid tot een landelijke viering, die gelijktijdig in meerdere steden plaatsvindt.

Dit jaar, op zondag 7 december (12:00–18:00), keert Kinderdag terug—groter, krachtiger en met nog meer energie. In 2025 sluiten HipHopHuis (Rotterdam) en Marres (Maastricht) aan, waarbij elke locatie een eigen creatieve draai geeft aan het thema. Alles verbonden door één gezamenlijke boodschap: Celebrate You.

What to Expect

De Children’s Directors zijn het kloppende hart van Kinderdag. Deze jonge creatievelingen doen niet alleen mee—ze bepalen mee de hele vibe van het festival. Van de programmering en thema’s tot de look & feel van de dag: zij brengen de stemmen van hun generatie front and center.

De Children’s Directors van dit jaar zijn Ravi Wijdenbosch (13), Isy Okafor (11), Mees Hogeweg (15) en Jaylin Naarden (16). Elk van hen brengt een eigen stijl, ideeën en lived experience mee—en die pure youth energy die Kinderdag definieert.

Kinderen kunnen zich onderdompelen in een dag vol:

• Hands-on workshops van lokale makers: van dans, muziek en kunst tot storytelling, fashion en meer.
• Een youth marketplace, waar jonge ondernemers hun eigen ideeën, creaties of producten kunnen delen of presenteren.
• Live optredens van opkomend jong talent om de dag feestelijk af te sluiten.
• Kunst, eten, muziek, beweging en community, verweven in elk moment.

Kinderdag is gratis toegankelijk en open voor kinderen van 2 tot 12 jaar, met een focus op inclusie, zelfexpressie en het vieren van identiteit door cultuur.

Full Moon Flow expands the soul of Same But Different, blending cypher energy with the warmth of Alternative R&B and Hip Hop-inspired sounds. It’s a space where dancers and music lovers can drop the pressure, move with intention, and connect on a deeper level.

Guided by the full moon, we tap into emotion, intuition, and the honest feeling of dance. No battles. No performance expectations. Just pure expression rooted in the culture. This edition continues the spirit of our Full Moon Sessions at Hiphophuis, creating an atmosphere where the music shifts the room and everyone can show up as themselves.

Join DJ, writer and interdisciplinary artist Lynnée Denise in Groove Theories: Origin Stories and Musical Myths, an exploration of the golden age of hip-hop. She’ll go into conversation with actor and theatre maker Addison dos Reis, sharing insights, stories, and inspiration through a curated listening session. Afterwards, enjoy a break with drinks and snacks, followed by a jam where Lynnée Denise will spin music from that era to open up the dance floor.

in Conversation w/ The Last Poets

Black Soil Film Festival, HiphopHuis en House of Knowledge faciliteerden een gesprek met The Last Poets. Onder begeleiding van moderator Tasha Slagtand werd er ruimte gecreëerd voor open dialoog, uitwisseling en gezamenlijke reflectie.

The Last Poets worden wereldwijd erkend als de spirituele voorvaders van hiphop en spoken word. Sinds de jaren 60 gebruiken zij poëzie als politiek instrument en cultureel kompas. Hun werk gaf stem aan Zwarte gemeenschappen tijdens de Civil Rights Movement in de Verenigde Staten en heeft generaties artiesten, activisten en denkers beïnvloed. Ook in Nederland is hun invloed voelbaar in het werk van spoken word-artiesten, community organizers, en iedereen die hiphop leeft.

Deze openbare bijeenkomst in Rotterdam richtte zich op thema’s als sociale rechtvaardigheid, diaspora, taal als verzet en de rol van kunst in tijden van onderdrukking. In een wereld waar mondiale ongelijkheid en politieke repressie voortduren, van Congo tot Gaza tot de Nederlandse Grondwet, herinnerden The Last Poets ons eraan waarom het essentieel blijft om ruimte te maken voor stemmen van onderaf.

Dit soort gesprekken zijn geen luxe, maar een noodzaak. Ze bieden ruimte voor heling, bewustwording en verbinding: waarden die aan de basis liggen van hiphop. Hiphop is ontstaan uit noodzaak, gevormd door woede, maar ook door hoop. De aanwezigheid van The Last Poets was niet alleen een moment van erkenning, maar ook van urgentie. Hun woorden weerklonken niet alleen uit het verleden, maar wezen ook richting de toekomst.
