Marketing & Storytelling Specialist
For 23 years, Hiphophuis has been the place for hip hop skills, knowledge, culture and community; a platform for experiencing and developing hip hop culture. Hiphophuis is rooted in the universal values of Hip Hop, a place where audiences, artists, beginners, professionals and other enthusiasts feel at home. Hiphophuis believes that powerful individuals create stronger communities and thereby bring resilience to society. Ambassadors of ‘hip hop culture’ strengthen the world.
We do this by unlocking creativity, organizing dialogue and reflection, nurturing artistic and organizational talent, and providing stages and publicity. Hiphophuis deploys tools, knowledge and networks that enable participants to grow into confident, well-informed creative leaders who shape their own future and the hip hop community, within and beyond our borders.
The job:
As a Marketing & Storytelling Specialist at Hiphophuis, you are a storyteller and platform builder. Together with the marketing & communications team, you strengthen Hiphophuis’s position as a knowledge center within the culture. You create a platform where diverse creative voices are heard, where untold stories come to life, and where different perspectives are given space. Through authentic storytelling, you make knowledge, awareness, values and history within hip hop accessible and take it to the next level.
You are the point of contact for internal and external communications around projects and events. You contribute ideas for campaigns, write copy, manage our social media channels, and ensure our message reaches the right people at the right time. You’re comfortable with data and analytics, you know what works and why, and you adjust accordingly. From concept to execution, from strategy to daily posts, you ensure Hiphophuis stays visible.
Simply put: if you have both creative and strategic skills and you’re a natural storyteller, this might be your place.
about you:
We’re looking for someone who doesn’t just know hip hop, but lives and breathes it. You’re connected to the culture from the Golden Era to now, from the Bronx to Rotterdam. You understand that hip hop is more than music and dance; it’s a movement, a mindset, and a way of being in the world.
You’re that person who always digs deeper. You don’t just scroll through your timeline but seek out sources, read the interviews, watch the documentaries, and listen to the podcasts. You want to know where things come from, who the pioneers are, what the context is. You gather your knowledge from all corners from academic articles to underground blogs, from mainstream media to grassroots movements.
You hold onto hip hop’s original values: authenticity, respect, community, resistance. You understand that storytelling in hip hop has always been about truth-telling, about giving a platform to voices that otherwise wouldn’t be heard, about documenting history from the culture’s own perspective.
If you have this energy; that mix of deep knowledge, cultural connection, and drive to share stories that matter, then you’re who we’re looking for.
what you bring:
- Deep connection with hip hop culture: you know the roots, respect the pioneers, and are aware of what’s happening now
- Part of an (inter)national network of BIPOC thinkers, makers and doers
- An intersectional, decolonial perspective. You understand power dynamics and want to change them
- You dig deeper than the surface: you delve into history, origins and context, draw connections between movements, and draw from diverse sources, from zines to research institutes, from street knowledge to academic work
- Minimum 5 years of experience in marketing & communications
- You’re a natural storyteller who knows how to translate cultural narratives into content that resonates
- You know how to build a platform where diverse voices are not only heard, but also amplified
- You’re at home on social media, video platforms and know which channels work for which stories
- Sharp sense of impact, you understand what makes stories powerful for different groups
- Hands-on experience with design tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with different content formats: interviews, video storytelling, podcasts, longform content
- Strong collaborative energy, giving and receiving feedback is part of your process
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement effective SEO strategies to improve organic search rankings.
- Conduct comprehensive keyword research to guide content teams.
- Optimize website content, landing pages, and paid search copy.
- Perform ongoing keyword discovery, expansion, and optimization.
- Research and implement SEO recommendations for website architecture, content, linking, and other factors to improve SEO positions for target keywords.
- Analyze and report on performance metrics, using tools such as Google Analytics and SEMrush.
- Monitor and evaluate search results and search performance across major search channels.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest SEO trends, algorithm changes, and best practices.
- Collaborate with the web development team to ensure SEO best practices are properly implemented on newly developed code.
- Work with editorial and marketing teams to drive SEO in content creation and content programming.
- Recommend changes to website architecture, content, linking, and other factors to improve SEO positions for target keywords.
Requirements:
- Project communications where you work with the content team to develop a strategic approach and drive results and impact
- You develop and execute all online and offline marketing campaigns aimed at attracting existing and new visitors to our programming, strengthening positioning, engagement and online community building
- You write copy for online and offline communications with an appropriate tone of voice
- You execute the content strategy together with the MarCom team
- You buy media, schedule social media posts, respond to DMs and comments
- You maintain the website, ensuring it’s always up to date
- You manage the necessary creatives, both internally and externally
- You proactively identify and interpret marketing & communications needs within and outside the organization
What We Offer:
- An informal, learning-oriented work culture
- A warm team where collaboration is encouraged
- A workplace in the artistic heart of Rotterdam
- A position for 32-36 hours per week
- Reasonably flexible working hours with some fixed meeting times
